# Can the System ID be customized in Sprout HR?

Here's a quick guide explaining the difference between the permanent System ID and the customizable Employee ID fields within Sprout HR.

When managing employee profiles, you might notice two different identification numbers. Understanding which one you can control is key to keeping your records organized.

**The short answer is no.** The **System ID** found in an employee's profile is a permanent, system-generated number that cannot be edited or customized.

The System ID serves as the unique "anchor" for an employee's data within the Sprout database. It is generated automatically to ensure:

- **Data Integrity:** It links attendance, payroll, and personal records together without risk of duplication.
- **Audit Tracking:** It provides a permanent reference point for the system to track a profile's history from the moment it is created.

### **The Solution: Use the Employee ID**

If you need to use a specific numbering format (such as alphanumeric codes or department-based IDs), you should use the **Employee ID** field instead.

- **Fully Customizable:** Unlike the System ID, the Employee ID can be edited to match your company’s preferred numbering convention.
- **Flexible Formatting:** You can use your own sequence, including letters and special characters (e.g., EST-2026-001).
- **Operational Use:** This is the ID that will typically appear on reports, payslips, and internal company documents.

While the **System ID** is for the software's backend logic, the **Employee ID** is designed for your company's personal customization needs.
