Resolving “Special Character” Error in Import Template

When using the import file in Sprout Payroll, this prompt message is one of the common problems: “Please check your Import Template. Error Found: There is special character inputted in Row (number),” even after manually re-entering the data.

This issue is typically caused by incorrect formatting in the OT (Overtime) columns, where values are entered in decimal format instead of the required time format.

Sample Incorrect format:

Correct Format:

Resolution:

Ensure that all OT values are entered using the correct hh:mm format instead of decimals.

Steps to Fix:

  1. Locate the affected row and OT column in the import file.
  2. Check for entries in decimal format (e.g., 1.5, 2.75).
  3. Convert these values to hh:mm format (e.g., 1:30, 2:45).
  4. Save the file and re-upload the template.

Note:
Only time-based formats (hh:mm) are accepted in OT fields. Using decimal values may trigger the “special character” error.
