Why does the “Please move closer to your assigned location” prompt appear when clocking in to the Mobile app?
When using the Geofence Mobile Clock In/Out feature, employees may encounter the prompt:
“Please move closer to your assigned location.”

This usually indicates an issue with the employee’s assigned location setup—even if the employee is assigned to a Department with Geofence enabled and is clocking in/out within the set radius.
Possible reasons and troubleshooting steps
1. No location assigned to the employee
Although uncommon, verify if a location is assigned to the employee’s profile:
- Go to Employee Profile > Locations

- Ensure that a Designated Workplace is selected.
Note: The designated workplace does not need to exactly match the location previously enabled via CRF (Change Request Form) for the Geofence feature to work. As long as the employee has an assigned Designated Workplace, the Geofence setup should still function properly.
Here’s how to assign a designated workplace on Sprout HR.
2. Incorrect location coordinates
Verify that the location coordinates are correctly set:
- Go to Maintenance > Location
- Review the assigned latitude and longitude (sample of an incorrect setup):

Ensure that the format is correct by clicking the edit, then update. Latitude should be entered first, followed by Longitude. Sample format:
-
Latitude: 14.31353, Longitude: 121.00964

After updating the setup
Once the location has been updated, advise the affected employees to:
- Log out of the mobile application
- Log back in
- Attempt to clock in again within the assigned location radius
Employees should now be able to clock in/out successfully.

If employees encounter a different prompt, please contact us and provide the Employee ID and a screenshot of the message for further assistance.
